Zero Waste Canada Unveils Updated Website, Crafted by Student Fund's Beneficiary

August 24, 2023
Zero Waste Canada, a national non-profit grassroots organization committed to ending our age of wastefulness, recently launched their redesigned website, with a fresh and captivating look. Recognizing the undeniable importance of a robust online presence, the non-profit organization aims to expand its reach to a wider target audience with a brand-new website, skillfully redesigned under the guidance of a student beneficiary of the Ottawa Community Social Innovation Student Fund (OCSISF)

Prajakta Amin (pictured), a Marketing Management student and the third beneficiary of the Student Fund, joined hands with Zero Waste Canada along with her team at the College's Social Innovation Lab in formulating a website strategy that harmonizes with their objectives and mission. Deanna Hammel, Board Member and Education and Youth Outreach Coordinator, expressed her appreciation, stating:

We're excited to announce the launch of the new Zero Waste Canada Website! A big thank you to students at the Social Innovation Lab for their outstanding ideas and dedicated efforts. We're thrilled to see it live!

Algonquin’s Social Innovation Lab is supported in part by the OCSISF. The lab hires students from the schools of Media and Design and Advanced Technology through the Service Learning in Design and Engineering (SLiDE) initiative. These SLiDE interns provide pro bono digital technology support to social enterprises and non-profits while also getting the opportunity to gain meaningful, real-world experiences.

Having this opportunity to build valuable community partnerships and contribute to social change in our unique capacities through our skills is truly an honour, said Prajakta. In addition to work done with Zero Waste Canada, SLiDE’s Winter cohort has also worked with Genvironment, a youth-led non-profit organization that advocates for sustainability education.

“These projects allow students to take initiative in effectively supporting their communities and provides a new perspective on what can be done to further adapt to an ever-changing environment,” said Kevin Holmes, Managing Director, Social Innovation Lab.

The lab would like to acknowledge the leadership and generous support of Chris Braeuel in establishing this innovative fund and his ongoing commitment to our community.  When asked about his motivation for creating the Student Fund, Braeuel said: “[it] was conceived during the pandemic, which posed unique challenges for many students and local social enterprises alike at the time. Having a targeted program, and fund, like this that fosters a mutually beneficial experience continues to provide a valuable contribution to our community at large.

The Student Fund is now accepting additional donations to ensure its growth and long-term sustainability and to allow the lab to continue to support amazing organizations in our community that help make this such a kind and caring community.
